Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR.

Join Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the hip hip Hippo and, of course, those hilarious, plotting penguins as they bound onto your stage in the musical adventure of a lifetime. Based on the smash DreamWorks animated motion picture, Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR. follows all of your favorite crack-a-lackin’ friends as they escape from their home in New York’s Central Park Zoo and find themselves on an unexpected journey to the madcap world of King Julien’s Madagascar.

Alex the lion is the king of the urban jungle, the main attraction at New York's Central Park Zoo. He and his best friends — Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo — have spent their whole lives in blissful captivity before an admiring public and with regular meals provided for them. Not content to leave well enough alone, Marty lets his curiosity get the better of him and makes his escape — with the help of some prodigious penguins — to explore the world.

Filled with outlandish characters, adventure galore and an upbeat score, Madagascar JR. will leave audiences with no choice but to “Move It, Move It!”

Mandatory Show Parent/Student Meetings:

There will be 2 mandatory parent/guardian meetings during the session, one on the second day of rehearsal, December 14^th at 10:30 am at New Braunfels Bible Church, and one at the beginning of tech week.

Auditions:
Students enrolled for the Winter Session of classes are eligible to sign up for an audition slot through the sign-up genius. (see below) Dance Call for all shows will be Friday December 6^th(More info below). Auditions for all shows will be on Saturday, December 7th from 10am-4pm at the CYT Studio where students will bring their prepared material (see below) to present for the artistic teams of all productions. Please arrive 10 minutes before your audition slot to make sure your paperwork is complete. Please plan to visit the costume room after your audition slot to be measured by our Costume Team (This is necessary so that the Costume committee can begin working as soon as the cast list is out. This is not a guarantee that you will be cast in the show).

Students will need to prepare:
A one minute cut of a song (this song should NOT be from the show your student is auditioning for. We suggest something Disney if this is your first time auditioning. Your track needs to be a karaoke track with no words)
A one minute or less monologue (you can use a provided monologue *Monologues coming soon! - OR you can select your own monologue if you would like)

3. Complete Winter 2024/2025 Audition Form (*MUST be completed no later than 3 days before auditions. The Karaoke track for your song must be uploaded at time of completion.) AUDITION FORM HERE

If you cannot make auditions in person, video auditions are accepted! Record a video of your one minute song and one minute (or less) monologue and upload the video on your audition form. Please email the Program Coordinator at shows@cytsanantonio.org if you have any questions. We want to see you audition for the show so if you have existing school or family commitments, please get information on how to submit a video audition. Video auditions do NOT exclude you from receiving a callback or participating in the show.

DANCE CALL: Dance call is for every student auditioning and will be Friday, December 6^th at the CYT Studio. We are splitting the dance call by age. The Dance call schedule is as follows:
*5-7pm: 8-12 year old age group
*7-9pm: 13-18 year old age group
About the Dance Call Instructional Video: This is the Dance that will be performed at the Dance Call on Friday Dec. 6^th. (one for the 8-12 year olds, one for the 13-18 year olds). They will be using these videos to practice with, based on age, regardless of auditioning for My Son Pinocchio or Madagascar, or both. If you are unable to attend the Dance Call, (all ages) please record a video audition of your student performing this dance, and submit the video as part of your Audition Form. If you have already submitted your audition form, please email the video to shows@cytsanantonio.org.
*If you are submitting a video audition because the sign-up genius is full, please come to the Dance Call in person if you're able.

Sunday, December 8th is our day for callbacks for all productions. Callbacks will run from 3-7 pm. Students will be notified on Saturday, December 7th as to whether they will need to be present for callbacks. When the callback info is sent out, please read through it carefully for details regarding the process and times. Not every student will be required to be at Call Backs.

Rehearsals:
Rehearsals will begin Friday, December 13th.

Alex

Alex, the lion, is the main attraction at the Central Park Zoo and undoubtedly “The King of New York City.” He’s a fun-loving fella whose devotion to steak is matched only by his devotion to his friends. Cast a great singer and actor but most importantly, someone who has that magnetic quality of a showman. Gender: Male Vocal range top: Eb5 Vocal range bottom: A3

Marty

Marty is a zebra with dreams of exploring beyond the confines of the Central Park Zoo and into the wild. Cast a young man who is a solid singer and actor who also possesses a sweet disposition. You want your audience to root for Marty. He should be a perfect complement to Alex. Gender: Male Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: A3

Gloria

Gloria, the hippopotamus, is a bold young lady with a maternal streak that shines when she’s with her three closest friends: Alex, Marty and Melman. This a great part for a performer who can act, sing and who can serve as the caretaker of the group. Gender: Female Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: Eb4

Melman

Melman is a kind-hearted giraffe who is a bit of a hypochondriac. He’s always just a little bit nervous, but when it comes down to it, he’ll rise to the situation. Pick a performer who can sing well but more notably, can carve out this comedic part with strong acting choices. Gender: Male Vocal range top: Db5 Vocal range bottom: E3

The Penguins

The Penguins are a group of birds on a mission: bust out of the zoo and return home to Antarctica. Skipper serves as the captain of the group, giving orders with ease and command. Kowalski is Skipper’s second-in-command and a dutiful one at that. Rico is the brute of the group and can karate chop anything in sight. Private’s primary job in the group is to maintain the cute and fuzzy disguise. Cast these four primary roles with performers who work well together. This is a fun opportunity to cast your youngest performers. Gender: Any

The Zookeepers

The Zookeepers introduce the crowds to all the sights and attractions of the Central Park Zoo. Zookeeper Zelda, Zookeeper Zeke and Zookeeper Zoe are perfect parts for proficient musicians and actors who can express a real excitement and passion for the animals. Mason

Mason is a chimpanzee with a bone to pick: though highly intelligent, his species seems to get a bad reputation for being simpleminded, and he takes that quite personally. This is a great acting role for a performer who can make bold choices from the get-go. Gender: Male

The Lemurs

The Lemurs are a wild band of creatures native to Madagascar trying desperately to avoid being eaten by the cat-like creatures called the Fossa. King Julien is their leader and the perfect part for the comedian of your company who can sing, dance, act and has intuitive comedic timing. Maurice is King Julien’s assistant who is not so welcoming to Madagascar’s new inhabitants. This part is perfect for an actor who can convey distrust and disinterest while still being a powerful second-in-command to King Julien. Mort is the littlest of the Lemurs, who can barely speak. Find a young, small, sweet performer who possesses a sense of comedy. Lynn, Lew, Lee and Lars are fun roles for young actors with bold personalities. The Fossa

The Fossa are cat-like predators with an appetite for Lemurs! The Fossa Leader is the biggest and baddest of the Fossa and is feared by most of the creatures in Madagascar. Cast an actor who has a great imagination for creating a larger-than-life creature who can strike fear with one look. For the rest of Fossa, choose an ensemble that can create a dominating pack of predators. Gender: Any

The Lionesses are a group of lady lions and Alex’s background singers and dancers. These are great featured roles for dancers. Gender: Female
